Ocean Adventure Submersible Style

For most private citizens, traveling more than 100 or so feet below the surface of the ocean is nearly impossible, and yet we are already booking flights into space. For me, the ocean is by far the most mysterious and exciting frontier—millions of species—conveniently located right here on Earth. So, I jumped at the chance to join my old friend Dr. Greg Stone (whom Peter and I met through the inimitable, Teddy Tucker, in Bermuda), and the New England Aquarium on a DEEPSEE submersible expedition in the Sea of Cortez

The amount of marine life on the El Bajo seamount was minor in comparison to what had been there in the 80s when Peter and Greg were there. But, for me, the comfort of descending through the depths, without having to cope with cumbersome scuba diving gear, was pure bliss. It is an experience that I think hundreds of citizens and government leaders should have to inspire them to protect the oceans and this is beginning to happen! Some innovative companies are producing new underwater submersibles that are reasonably priced, easier to operate and safer.
